Once Upon a Time in Naxos

Mythology tales, local gastronomy trails and donkey tails!

What better way for young adventurers to spend a fun and culturally immersive day than exploring the myths and magic of the countryside! Our fresh morning start begins at Naxos Town market for a traditional experience of hand picking the best of the best for our picnic lunch. We will visit traditional food stores, a wood oven bakery and historic grocery known for delicious, locally-produced, cheese and olives. The country outing begins with a drive to the temple of Demetra, ancient goddess of agriculture and fertility. Listening to mythological tales in the rich agricultural landscape, the spirit of this ancient earth comes alive. Next, we drive to the island’s largest expanse of olive groves. In this serene and peaceful setting, home to farm animals, children have the opportunity to meet and interact with the most famous greek equine: the donkey! After feeding the donkeys, it’s time for our picnic, too. Here, under the olive trees, we get to know more about the gods; Aristaeus, ancient god of cheese and Athena, goddess of wisdom whose eternal gift to the world was the olive tree. After our farmer’s brunch, young and old kids can play a game of darts, like Artemis, ancient goddess of nature! We end our exciting morning with a visit to the most picturesque village of the island, Chalki known for its famous local custard pastry (“galaktoboureko”) and, for parents, there is an extra treat; a visit to the old distillery, founded more than 100 years ago, for a taste of the local “citron” liqueur. Drive back to the hotel with treasured memories of a day to remember.
